FIELD TRIPS and SOCIAL EVENTSThere are six choices of field trip on Wednesday 1 October: four full-day trips and two half-day trips (morning & afternoon). Community groups are integral in the management of many of the field trip destinations. All trips are subject to minimum and maximum numbers, and will be closed when full or if insufficient numbers — so please register early! Three social events are planned — the poster session on Monday afternoon, an optional informal mixer Monday evening, and the conference dinner on the Wednesday evening. The dinner also has limited numbers and will be closed off when places are taken. |

FULL-DAY TRIPSTiritiri Matangi Island$80 per person. After 25 years of ecological restoration, Tiritiri Matangi has gained both a national and an international reputation as a wildlife experience. A community group, Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi, plays an important role through contributions to the island's infrastructure and biodiversity management. The field trip will provide an opportunity to assess the successes and issues of this restoration project. The boat trip is weather dependent — if cancelled, there will an opportunity to join the Rangitoto trip. $80 per person. For more information see DOC website or Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi website. Boat will depart Auckland ferry terminal at 9.00am, returning by 5:00pm. Transport to ferry not included — assemble at the ferry terminal by 8.30am. Tawharanui Regional Park$50 per person. Tawharanui Regional Park is a mainland island, with a 2.5km predator–proof fence isolating it from the surrounding environments. Park management is supported by a community group, Tawharanui Open Sanctuary Society (TOSSI). The field trip will focus on the biodiversity successes and predator management issues within the park. For more information see Tawharanui Regional Park website. $50 per person. Departs from Unitec at 8:30am, return by 5pm. Ark in the Park$50 per person. This is a Forest and Bird mainland island project in partnership with the Auckland Regional Council. The project aims to reduce significantly animal and plant pests in a 2000ha area of the northern Waitakere Ranges, west of Auckland City. Urban ecological mitigation initiatives of Waitakere City will also be viewed en route. For more information see Ark in the Park website. $50 per person. Departs from Unitec at 9:15am, return by 4.30pm. Rangitoto Island$40 per person. Rangitoto is an Auckland icon, dominating the skyline from the city and Hauraki Gulf alike. Past restoration actions have included the eradication of possums and wallabies from the island and neighbouring Motutapu. The Department of Conservation is now investigating the removal of the last seven mammalian pests – Norway rats, ship rats, mice, rabbits, stoats, feral cats and hedgehogs. The field trip will explore the complex issues associated with this eradication target. For more information see DOC Pest Eradication website. $40 per person. HALF-DAY TRIPSEstuarine restoration, 9am–12.30pm$25 per person Technological advances in land–based wastewater treatment has allowed the ecological restoration of 500ha of estuarine habitat of the Manukau Harbour and 13km of shoreline. This has had significant benefits for wading birds – the field trip is an opportunity to view the birds on the high–tide roosts. Bring your own binoculars! $25 per person, morning tea included. Departs from Unitec at 9:15am, return by 12.30pm. Chelsea Park, 1pm–4.30pm$25 per person A visit to Auckland's most recently acquired park – 37ha of vegetated land and lakes purchased this year, located within sight of the Auckland CBD. The park is a significant contribution to the protection of a section of the Waitemata Harbour coastline recognised as having regional environmental importance. $25 per person, afternoon tea included. Departs from Unitec at 1:00pm, return by 4.30pm. SOCIAL EVENTSThree social events are included in the programme. Included in the registration cost is the poster session on Monday afternoon (one glass of wine/beer provided). Optional social events are the informal mixer on the Monday night, and the conference dinner on the Wednesday night. Tickets for these (including partner tickets) can be booked through the registration process. Informal mixerCost: $30 per person. Held on Monday 29 September from 6.30pm — an opportunity to unwind and network at Carringtons, the on-campus restaurant in an historical setting, only 5 minutes walk from the conference venue. Includes a light meal, drinks available from the cash bar. Conference dinnerCost: $80 per person. The conference dinner will be held from 7:30 pm on Wednesday 1 October at Carringtons Restaurant on-campus. The dinner will be a buffet with hot and cold dishes (including vegetarian options) and desserts. We will also provide the equivalent of 2 glasses of wine per person, and additional drinks can be purchased from the cash bar. Numbers strictly limited for this event, so please register early. |
